My grandmothers, Isabel and Leah inspired the writing of my novels. I never met either of them but learned that one worked on a sugar plantation like the enslaved heroines in my novels: Hessie, Mariama, Josie, Millie and Octavia. And, like these women, an overseer of her work gang, raped my grandmother.
My other grandmother, a homemaker, birthed almost a dozen children, while her husband, my grandfather, simultaneously sired an entirely new family with another woman. My grandmothers were examples of bravery and grit. Because of their fortitude, resilience, grace and love, I am here. In their honour, I dedicate my imprint, Isalea Publishing, to Isabel and Leah. These stories are for you grandmas!!
